Marc Asnin

Artist Talk & Book Signing

This Saturday, April 20 at 7:30PM
Drinks provided by Ninkasi Brewing Co.

Please join us for an artist talk / slide show & book signing with photographer Marc Asnin, who will be discussing his book Uncle Charlie, recently published by Contrasto.  Drinks will be provided by Ninkasi & Asnin will be signing copies of Uncle Charlie.

“People often ask me what Uncle Charlie is about. After thirty years, one would think I would be able to easily sum it up. But this book is life, raw unintelligible life; the life of one man, my uncle, and as in life, there are no easy answers or summaries. It’s about broken dreams, disappointment, and having the resiliency to find slivers of happiness in an oppressed existence. It’s about consequences, missed opportunities, delusions and loss. It’s about having the guts to look intensely at the familiar and process what’s in front of you, taking an account of your family, your society and what is said about both. It’s about a relationship between two men, from two generations, living very different lives, bound by family. It’s collaboration of sorts: his words and my images. It’s my dance with my godfather.”

Object by Robert Mapplethorpe.

Recently published by Dashwood Books, Object features many previously unpublished works by Mapplethorpe from his early career from 1969 to 1973. Primarily using appropriated imagery from magazines in mixed-media collage and assemblage pieces made up of spray paint, fabrics and found objects like potato bags, beer cans and cookie bags along with a few examples of his own first forays into photography using his newly acquired Polaroid camera in 1970. Beautifully designed by Dimitri Levas with an original text Robert’s Hands by Patti Smith.

A Period of Juvenile Prosperity by Mike Brodie.

Available at Ampersand or online here: http://bit.ly/YuwMpH

“But I needed to find out for myself. Two weeks later I was gone, witnessing my new world wizz by, especially at dusk, then darkness as I watched the sum of all the city lights cast my silhouette across the pine trees of the Florida panhandle. This was it, I was riding my very first freight train. And soon, what would begin as mere natural curiosity and self-discovery would evolve into a casting call of sorts, taking photographs of my newfound friends.” - Mike Brodie.

If you are in New York or LA, be sure to check out the exhibitions of Brodie’s work currently on view at Yossi Milo & M+B.
