Last minute book ideas ….
There have been so many great books published
in the second half of 2011. It’s hard to isolate favorites,
but we took a walk around the shop & selected a few
standouts & a couple old favorites. Needless to say,
we’d love to see these under the tree come Xmas morn.
From top to bottom ….
John Gossage & Alec Soth: The Auckland Project - Radius Books - $55
(my god, Gossage has such a singular way of looking at the world. equal parts poster
& book, the design & production quality of this title is amazingly sensual. as an example,
the books are encased in a thick plastic sleeve, the touch & smell of which lingers as you
look through them.)
Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage - Gestalten - $60
(most collage books are poorly edited, but this one really is amazing.)
In the Picture: Self-Portraits, 1958-2011 Lee Friedlander - Yale - $75
(the impulse to turn the camera on oneself is strong; Friedlander does it best.)
Rimaldas Viksraitis: Grimaces of the Weary Village - edited by Martin Parr - $50
(a boozy, gritty, licentious romp trough the villages of Lithuania.)
Own Label: Sainsbury’s Design Studio 1962-1977 - Jonny Trunk - FUEL - $32.50
(we love everything they publish.)
Let’s sit down before we go - Bertien van Manen - MACK - $45
(everyone loves the new Christian Patterson book by MACK, but this
one is equally amazing & should not be ignored.)
Manhattan Out - Raymond Depardon - Steidl - $55
(this is an old favorite; amazing street photography, perfect book design.)
Maske - Phyllis Galembo - Boot - $45
(we collect masks, so this has been a favorite of ours for a while.)
Menu Design in America: 1850-1985 - Steven Heller - Taschen - $60
(food, graphic design & roadside Americana all in one book; can’t ask for much more.)
