A few detail shots of the French
mechanical drafting exercises we
have on display this month.
Dating back to the start of the Twentieth-Century,
these hand-drawn drafting exercises were executed by
a French student evidently named Dupuy. The precise
lines, accuracy of detail & subtle coloring speak back to a
time when the artistry of a draftsman’s hand was integral
to the mechanical beauty of the Machine Age. Removed as
we are by over 100 years & only vaguely aware of their
intended use, we are not compelled to rigorously scrutinize
the work, as the professor, who stamped his approval, likely
did. Instead, following the arcs & angles of these lines, our
imagination is freed to create the seemingly impossible machines
that laid the track, as it were, for our current Digital Age.
