Completely by chance, our latest book order was comprised of titles by important American photographers that focus almost exclusively on the American landscape, the structures & roadways that either marr or harmonize with it & the endless variety of people that interact with it. Shooting photographs almost a decade before the work found in Soth’s From Here to There, Darius & Tabitha Kinsey were the supreme photographers of the logging industry in the Pacific Northwest. Kinsey Photographer is a $30 reproduction of the original two volume set published by the Scrimshaw Press in 1975, the first edition of which we also have at $300. First Pictures was one of my favorite titles published last year; it brings together much of Sternfeld’s color work between 1971 & 1980, which fits within the lineage of Eggleston’s Chromes & the Stephen Shore survey that we’ve had in the past & now have in stock again. One thing regarding Shore: the Phaidon Press edition of American Surfaces is finally available again & we’ll have it in shortly. With Prairie & Sea Stories, Adams is the quiet outsider. He’s also, in my opinion, the most moving out of the group. I can never quite articulate why I’m so drawn to his work. Perhaps it’s because he captures moments that don’t need words at all.
