Chicago-based designer Alex Fuller is one of seven partners in the studio/gallery/blog called The Post Family, Design Director at the Leo Burnett Dept. of Design & co-founder of 5x7 publishing. His latest publication through 5x7 is Two Letter Words, a limited edition book which “…explores the combination of abstracted geometric letterforms & the resulting words & marks they create.” To celebrate its release, Ampersand will host a book launch party on May 11. No mere excuse to drink Ninkasi beer, Fuller will also be presenting a slideshow discussion about his design work, self-initiated projects like 5x7 & the trials & exaltations of producing small press publications.

He’ll be discussing his ongoing photographic essay & series of interviews titled A Natural Order, which was published to wide acclaim earlier this year by Portland-based publisher Nazraeli Press. Photographs from the series have been widely exhibited, including shows at Gallery 339 in Philadelphia, RISD Museum in Rhode Island, Pier 24 in San Francisco & an upcoming solo exhibition at Michael Hoppen Contemporary in London. The book has also been selected as a finalist for the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards & will be on display at Paris Photo in November.

We’re once again teaming up with Kevin Sampsell of Future Tense Books for an outdoor reading on our back patio with Justin Maurer & Lindsey Kugler. Maurer will be reading from his new title, Seventeen Television, which was published by Vol. 1 Brooklyn.  He is also the frontman for The Clorox Girls & will be playing a show in Portland later that night. Kugler will be reading from her limited edition book titled Here, published through the writing program at Portland’s IPRC.

Join Ampersand next Tuesday, June 12 at 7:30PM for a talk by artist, book maker & curator, Christopher Gianunzio. We’ll be serving drinks courtesy of Ninkasi Brewing Co. & a book signing will follow the talk.

Gianunzio will be speaking about his current publishing endeavors & the recent exhibition he organized at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center entitled Of the Ordinary. All of these projects mine the photographic archive as source material, expanding the already ubiquitous nature of contemporary photographic thinking.

Gianunzio is an artist & curator based in Philadelphia. He has exhibited nationally & internationally, most recently at Le Garage Arles, France, Little Big Press 2nd Edition at FotoGraphia Rome, the International Fotobook Festival in Kassel Germany, Chelsea Art Museum, Skulpturenpark in Berlin, Germany & also at NYCAMS gallery in New York City, the University of Georgia & Rochester Contemporary Art Center. In 2011, he was commissioned to produce a text for the Brighton Photo Fringe under the direction of Charlotte Cotton.

He is currently the Assistant Director at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center where he has organized exhibitions including the work of Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Alyse Emdur, La Toya Ruby Frazier, Luis Gispert, Beate Gütschow, Greg Halpern, Ron Jude, Christian Patterson,Taryn Simon, Chad States,  Mark Steinmetz & Ofer Wolberger.

They will discuss Daylight’s recent publication titled Photographs Not Taken, to which Elkins & Johnson contributed essays. A question & answer & book signing will follow.

Amy Elkins is a Portland based photographer whose work is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. Her work has been shown widley, most recently in a show with Jen Davis titled looking & looking at Light Work Gallery in Syracuse, New York.

Eirik Johnson is a Seattle based photographer whose monograph, Sawdust Mountain, was published by Aperture in 2009. His current show at Gail Gibson Gallery in Seattle features work from his series on Mushroom Camps & Barrow Alaska Cabins. If you are in Seattle on May 19, he will be speaking at G. Gibson Gallery about the exhibition.

Nick Haymes & Gabe Nevins

Ampersand is pleased to present an artist talk & book signing by San Francisco based photographer, Nick Haymes. Gabe Nevins, the subject of Haymes’ recently published book, GABE, will also be present. Nevins played the lead role in Gus Van Sant’s 2007 film set here in Portland titled Paranoid Park, the departure point for a body of work that graphically records Nevin’s drug use, emotional breakdown & progression into homelessness that followed his momentary brush with movie stardom. Nick Haymes is also involved with Little Big Man, an independent publishing house that specializes in small edition, experimental photography books, of which he’ll speak more about the night of the event.
