Excellent recent review by Roberta Smith in the New York Times of gallery shows at ZieherSmith & Pace/Macgill featuring anonymous, found & outsider photography from collections by Robert Jackson & David Winter.
You can read the article here.
As many of you may know, we’ve long worked closely with Robert Jackson on a collector/dealer basis & also published a selection of found photographs from his collection in a 2011 book titled Pure Photography, which is now out of print. His most recent book, The Seduction of Color, is available online here.
Calling it “compelling appropriation art,” Smith also touches upon a large archive of anonymous Type 42 Polaroid photographs (one is shown above) that feature in the ZieherSmith show. A majority of the collection (which amounts to nearly 950 photographs) belongs to Bay Area artist Jason Brinkerhoff, whose work we showed in June & with whom we collaborated in designing & publishing a book titled HEAD FAKE, which is comprised of collected vintage photos, newspaper clippings, fashion spreads & video stills which figure in Brinkerhoff’s studio practice.
